Speedier Wiring for T5's Lighting

In its largest ever single contract, worldwide, Wieland Electric is supplying several variants of its gesis modular wiring solution to the UK's most prestigious project in recent years - Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 (T5).

Wieland products are playing key roles in the installation of lighting at T5, enabling faster and more accurate installation and commissioning. They include the recently introduced gesis EIB bus system, Metalynx armoured wiring system, gesis NRG flat cable systems and gesis CON standard modular installation products.

Wieland will be supplying the cabling for lighting in the main terminal (T5A), including the arrivals and departure areas, waiting halls and luggage check-in areas  using Metalynx armoured wiring system for increased speed of installation with reduced chance of errors. The Metalynx tees will be pre-fitted to luminaires before delivery to site to reduce on-site wiring time.

In addition, the entire 6000-vehicle car park and linking tunnels between terminals 5A and 5B have been specified to make use of gesis CON modular installation system. To ensure compliance with BAA specifications gesis CON will be laid in enclosed trunking for additional mechanical protection.

The EIB network in terminal 5B will be supplied through gesis NRG flat cable with power and data. In contrast to rigid busbars, gesis NRG flat cable can be easily and conveniently installed in cable ducts and shaped to the architectural design. Branches can then be added exactly where they are needed with no interruption to the power supply.

As well as powering the lighting, Wieland is supplying the podis system for the supply of power and data the length of T5's 18km long baggage conveyor systems.
