Wieland Connects Cannon Place

Wieland Electric has supplied its Metalynx armoured, structured wiring system to enable fast connection of lighting, small power and fan coil units at Cannon Place, a 389,000sq ft landmark commercial complex above the Cannon Street major transport interchange, in the City of London.

The new eight-storey development has been constructed over and around Network Rail and London Underground lines, and incorporates upgraded facilities for both stations. It is already a familiar sight to the 27 million passengers who pass through Cannon Street Station every year and have had to weave their way through the complex construction works.

The Cannon Place scheme has been carried out by developer Hines, working in close partnership with Network Rail and London Underground. Architect Foggo Associates' design replaces two narrow 1960s office buildings with a single scheme of 389,000sq ft of modern, almost column free space and the overall scheme is designed to BREEAM 'Very Good'.

The mechanical and electrical services were specified by Foggo Associates and Wieland's Metalynx structured wiring, was chosen by the installers, as it facilitated fast installation due to the offsite manufacture of the Metalynx System. The 'plug and play' functionality of the Metalynx system proved invaluable to connect the supply of lighting fittings, fan coil units, small power and cleaner sockets within the complex simply and easily, whilst waste was kept to the bare minimum.

Cannon Place's principal design elements include natural daylight where possible throughout the complex and lighting control working in conjunction with daylight linking. The lighting design using high efficiency louvres and high frequency control gear linked via a DALI network to a programmable control system. This was also integrated through Wieland's Metalynx system to save valuable time on site and keep costs to a minimum.

Metalynx is ideal for use with lighting circuits and other power requirements located above the ceiling. The armouring is provided by die-cast aluminium housings for the connectors and accessories, and flexible metal conduit for the cables. The cables are all low-smoke, zero-halogen insulated, with single cores compliant with BS 7211 and multi-cores constructed to BS 7211. The identification colours of the cores comply with industry requirements.
